A Life Rooted in the Manawatu: My Journey from the Family Farm to Where I Am Today

Georgia Trembath
Georgia Trembath: MSD Animal Health SenseHub Training Specialist, Lower North Island.

Growing up on a family farm in the heart of the Manawatu, I was immersed in the rhythms of rural life from a young age. I didn’t know it at the time, but these experiences would shape not just my childhood, but my perspective on life, work, and the world around me.

The farm was my playground. I remember when I was younger, if I ever went missing, Dad would know exactly where to find me—down at the calf sheds talking to them like they were my friends. There was something about the quiet solitude of the farm that drew me in. I found peace in the repetitive tasks—milking cows, putting up breaks getting out cows and calves, and watching the seasons unfold. But it wasn’t just about the work; it was about the life lessons learned along the way.

As I grew older, my love for farming naturally evolved. I knew that I wanted to expand my knowledge and take my passion further. This led me to university, where I pursued a degree in Animal Science and Genetics. It was there that I started to formalize my understanding of how genetics and breeding could make a real difference in the farming world. I was captivated by the potential of animal genetics to improve herds over generations, and the idea of breeding better, stronger, and more efficient livestock ignited a new passion within me.

After completing my degree, I pursued a Postgraduate Diploma in Animal Genetics, diving even deeper into the science behind herd improvement. It was this experience that sparked my love for breeding cows and the entire process of genetic selection. The ability to influence the future of a herd, improving traits like milk production, fertility, and health, was not just fascinating—it was deeply rewarding. There’s something incredibly motivating about seeing the tangible results of your hard work over generations. Every calf born with improved genetics, every herd that becomes stronger and more productive, is a reflection of the hours of research, planning, and hands-on work that went into it.

As my career evolved, I moved into a more strategic role as an analyst in corporate farming. This transition allowed me to combine my passion for agriculture with my growing interest in technology and data. In this role, I focused on helping farms—across a variety of sectors, including dairy, sheep, deer, and beef cattle—improve their adoption and use of technology on the farm. The farming world is changing rapidly, and integrating the right tools and systems can make all the difference in improving efficiency, productivity, and sustainability.

This experience gave me a broader perspective on farming, helping me understand the intersection of tradition and innovation in the agricultural sector

When I’m not working in agriculture, I’m equally engaged in my other passion: netball. From playing on the court to being involved in committee work, I’ve dedicated a significant amount of my time to this sport. I love the teamwork, the strategy, and the community that netball fosters, and I’ve met some of my closest friends through it. Being part of a netball team has taught me the value of collaboration, persistence, and leadership—skills that translate just as easily onto the farm as they do on the court.

Baking is something I’ve always enjoyed—it’s a creative and calming outlet that I use to unwind. Whether it’s baking for my family, friends, or colleagues, there’s something so rewarding about sharing homemade treats.

Today, one of the most fulfilling parts of my job is working directly with farmers and helping them on their journey to understand their cows and farm systems better. I love seeing the changes they make to their operations—whether it’s through adopting new technologies, improving herd management, or simply making more informed decisions that help them work smarter. It’s incredibly rewarding to watch as these changes lead to better results, not only in terms of productivity but also in the time and freedom they get to spend with their families. To me, that’s the true impact of the work I do: helping people live better, more balanced lives while also improving their farm operations.

I’m also fortunate to work with a great team around me. The support, collaboration, and shared knowledge within my team are essential to our success. Having a group of like-minded professionals who bring diverse skills and perspectives to the table makes the work even more rewarding. Together, we can achieve so much more, and I’m grateful for the camaraderie and expertise that each person brings to the role.

The lessons learned on the family farm, combined with my education, my role in technology adoption, and my community involvement, are the foundation of my approach to both work and life.
